The musical films created at Paramount had a style all their own, and a slate of singing stars as bright as any in Hollywood. First on that list was Bing Crosby, who appeared in almost 50 Paramount films between 1932 and 1954. Other luminaries included Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, and Fred Astaire. Their musicals ranged from the elegant (The Big Broadcast series of the 1930s) to the downright silly (six Hope-Crosby Road movies), but they all had one thing in common: great songs from such luminaries as Irving Berlin (Blue Skies, Holiday Inn), Cole Porter (Anything Goes), Harold Arlen (Star Spangled Rhythm with Johnny Mercer, The Country Girl with Ira Gershwin), Jimmy Van Heusen’s Academy Award winning hits from Going My Way and The Bells of St. Mary’s, and many more.
