The Shedd Institute presents saxophonist Joshua Redman touring in support of his new release Compass (January, 2009). Band members joining Mr. Redman are Gregory Hutchinson (drums) and Matt Penman (bass). “One thing I’ve discovered about myself,” says Redman, “is that I’m an eclectic—as a person and as a musician. I know that I will never be comfortable being perceived as a specialist of one type of music, or as a representative of only one style. There doesn’t have to be a contradiction between being eclectic and being focused.” Compass is “…a further exploration of the trio format…an expansion on and an extension of Back East (his acclaimed 2007 trio session).” Redman stretches the shape of the trio setting, on the most audacious of these tracks, performing with the entire line-up in a double-trio configuration..
