East meets West in this extraordinary 5-Tony Award winning Rodgers and Hammerstein classic based on Margaret Landon’s 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam, itself derived from the memoirs of English widow Anna Leonowens, who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. Leonowens arrives at the Royal Palace in Bangkok with her young son and her own strong will is pitted against the King’s, as the two must cope with the deep differences between their respective cultures. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story. Classic songs include “Getting To Know You”, “Hello, Young Lovers”, “Something Wonderful”, “We Kiss In A Shadow”, “I Have Dreamed”, and “I Whistle A Happy Tune”.
The Sunday, August 5th matinee performance is open captioned. Contact the Hult Center Ticket Office (541-682-5000) for more information.
