It was not long before Paris took the elements of American culture which it adopted in the ‘20s and made them its own. By the early 1930s jazz was no longer a strictly American idiom and the Americans in Paris were no longer strictly American. The most important example of the former phenomenon is, of course, that of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stéphane Grappelli, who together formed the legendary Quintet of the Hot Club of France and proceeded to make their own indelible mark on jazz history. As for the Americans, three expatriate pianists -- Joe Turner, Teddy Weatherford, and Herman Chittison -- settled in for successful careers. And Josephine Baker assumed the manner of her new home, strolled the Champs Elysées with a cheetah, and adopted a more "French" style of singing. Dick Hyman is joined by guitar masters Howard Alden and Bucky Pizzarelli, jazz violinist Johnny Frigo, vocalist Lenanne Sylvester, and the Festival Jazz Band in a sizzling reminiscence of the decade.
