Background, professional training and performance history
Greg plays just about any instrument that fits his trumpet mouthpiece and has three valves (or four, or sometimes even none). Since winning his first orchestra job the summer he completed his undergraduate degree, Greg has has spent more than a decade performing with orchestras, operas, ballets, brass quintets, and musical theaters, in Boston, San Francisco, and now Oregon. He is currently a member of the Rogue Valley and Vermont Symphony orchestras and was formerly a member of the Atlantic, Cape Cod, and Glens Falls Symphonies. He has also performed at the Oregon Bach Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, Opera San Jose, New World Symphony, and played the Broadway break in run of Porgy & Bess at the American Repertory Theatre. He’s been fortunate to perform with some notable musicians, including conductors Lorin Maazel and James Levine, composers John Adams and Gunther Schuller, and soloists including Yo-Yo Ma, Jamie Laredo, Sharon Isben, and Sarah Chang. As an educator, Greg served as the Program Director of Youth Music Monterey County, as the brass coach for Youth Orchestra Salinas, and has coached students in the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, the University of New Hampshire, Brandies University, and Wellesley College.
Greg holds degrees from Bard College and the New England Conservatory, and has also studied and performed at the Tanglewood Music Center, Pacific Music Festival, and Spoleto Festival USA.
Artist statement and teaching philosophy
Over the years, I’ve found that students have the best experience when they are focused on singing through their instruments and expressing themselves though the music. The most common obstacles to this are weak fundamentals and poor practice habits. I work with students to make foundational technical skills habitual and subconscious so that they can focus on musical expression. I also work with students to develop the ability to evaluate their own performance, identify areas for improvement, and use problem solving to develop creative practice techniques. This allows students to focus on musical expression and developing a sense of style.
