Shirlanna Shoop has been performing for as long as she can remember. Her mother often regales others with how she would try to sing her to sleep as a babe, only to have her shake herself awake so she could listen instead. Shirlanna’s performances began with her somewhat unwilling siblings and more attentive pets, then with Oregon Children’s Choir and various other choirs such as church and school choirs. Shirlanna competed with Synergy, an all women’s high school a capella group, in the finals of the International Competition of High School A capella in New York, 2013. Shirlanna also performed in Carnegie Hall with the National Honors Choir that same year.
More recently, in 2022 Shirlanna traveled with the University of Oregon Chamber Choir to Spain to perform Joby Talbot’s hour-long work “Path of Miracles”, followed that summer with a performance of the St. Matthew Passion at the Oregon Bach Festival. Along with Shirlanna’s choral accomplishments, she has performed in Theatre and Musical Theatre throughout high school and college. Including a production of A Little Night Music (Fredrika) with the University of Oregon Opera Company.
Shirlanna’s musical journey has included a wide variety of styles from Classical (Romantic and Early Music) to Pop, Musical Theatre to Church Music. She holds a Bmus in Vocal Performance from the University of Oregon and is currently performing with the theater company The
Non-Stop Players.
I love to find the way in which a student learns best, and grows confidence and healthy habits. What works for one student may not work for the next, and I always approach each lesson with that in mind. I constantly strive to create a supportive and fun environment that allows each student the room to learn and grow at their pace. My goal is to equip each student with the knowledge they need to have healthy vocal habits, ability to practice on their own, and personal musicality to see them through whatever path with music they wish to take.
Music has always had an astounding ability to communicate emotions and experiences even across languages. Music making can be an exceptionally personal experience, singing especially, and always deserves an approach filled with respect from the performer, the teacher, and the audience.
Shirlanna teaches voice, ear training and musical literacy
Voice - teaching students healthy vocal technique (phonating, matching pitch, breath support, breath control), individual musicality (telling a story using dynamics and diction as well as stylistic choices), and reading music/music literacy with a focus for voices.
Musical Theatre, Classical, Pop styles beginner to intermediate for all ages
Ear Training and Musical Literacy- focus on sight singing using Solfege in “movable do” system, interval/chord recognition, melody dictation, rhythm dictation, and basics of reading music (time signatures, key signatures, treble/bass clef, etc) to equip the singer with the ability to practice on their own.
