Behind every great song is...well, a great composer and lyricist. This evening of songs by composer Harold Arlen is the first of several concerts that we are dedicating this summer to American songbook whose range and brilliance of top-drawer work is quite remarkable.
NEW 8:00 PM Start Time!
Beyond The Rainbow is one of the 4 OFAM evening concerts held at The Shedd’s Jaqua Concert Hall that begin at 8:00 pm rather than our usual 7:30 pm and run 1 hour 15 min without intermission.
We’ve designed these slightly-shorter, later-starting "Summer Shorts", as we’re calling them, so our patrons can enjoy a more leisurely dinner before coming to a refreshingly entertaining evening of fine music!
Unlike most of his contemporaries, Arlen had very little success on Broadway, but made his impact in musical revues (such as the Cotton Club shows), movie musicals, and "one-off" hit songs. And what an impact! This is the guy who wrote the tunes to “Over The Rainbow” (and all the rest of the music from The Wizard of Oz), “That Old Black Magic”, “It’s Only A Paper Moon”, “Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe”, “My Shining Hour”, and “Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive”, to name just a few.
You’ll hear these and more as delivered by Shirley Andress, Maria Jette, and Michael Stone with hot instrumentals, of course, offered up by Ken Peplowski and the band.
