At least since the 1920s, jazz artists have found inspiration in popular songs. For its first foray into the American popular songbook, the Jazz Heritage Project will celebrate the work of composer Harold Arlen and lyricist Johnny Mercer, two favorites of jazz musicians. Vocalist Shirley Andress will be featured in this special program. As a team, Arlen and Mercer wrote many enduring standards such as "The Blues in the Night" and "Out of this World." Away from the other, they wrote also well-known songs like "Ill Wind" and lesser-known gems like "My New Celebrity Is You." Joining Carl and Shirley will be pianist Toby Koenigsberg and an all-start jazz band.
