"Dave Douglas is the unassuming king of independent jazz, a model of do-it-yourself moxie, initiative and artistic freedom." -- DownBeat
"That these players have developed a vital shorthand, a band dialect, should be no surprise. Still, Brazen Heart clears a high bar for chemistry, starting with the bond between Mr. Douglas, with his jabbing chatter, and Mr. Irabagon, with his alert and gusty control. This front line works by cooperative tension with the rhythm section." -- The New York Times
Dave Douglas' unique contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award and two Grammy nominations. Douglas has developed his work for several unique ensembles with whom he’s currently active, including his new quintet--Dave Douglas (trumpet), Fabian Almazan (piano), Jon Irabagon (sax(, Linda Oh (bass), and Rudy Royston (drums)--, an electric sextet (Keystone), and Sound Prints Quintet, co-led with saxophonist Joe Lovano. The Quintet released its debut recording, Be Still, in September 2012 with singer Aoife O’Donovan, the first time Douglas has featured a vocalist on a recording. The follow-up to that critically-acclaimed recording, Time Travel, released April 2013. Riverside and Present Joys, with Uri Caine, were released in 2014. In October 2015 the ensemble released Brazen Heart.
The Dave Douglas Quintet makes its first stop on its West Coast tour in support of Brazen Heart at The Shedd Institute Wed, February 17th.
