Tenor saxophonist Joe Manis and vocalist Siri Vik perform singer Abbey Lincoln's 1957 album That's Him! in its entirety, following up their previous Shedd successes: performing John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman/John Coltrane Ballads and Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley.
That's Him! was only Lincoln's second album in her long, eclectic, and influential career. Joe and Siri will be joined by Greg Goebel, piano, Tyler Abbott, bass, and Todd Strait, drums to recreate what was deemed the "Riverside Jazz Stars" from the original recording: Sonny Rollins, tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly, piano, Paul Chambers, bass, and Max Roach, drums (who would later marry Lincoln). The program will include works by Arlen, Weill, McHugh, Billie Holiday, Kern/Hammerstein, and more: repertoire that, according to the original album liner notes, is "rich, sound, blues-tinged material bound together by a very basic central theme--a woman singing about her man, hers for better or worse." Lincoln described this recording as her wanting to "do a jazz date, with some good musicians," which is exactly what Vik will do on this show alongside Manis and company.
