The blues: sad, simple, down and dirty. Ballads: slow, lyrical, and delicate. Or must they be? In fact, the blues can be strutting, celebratory, or abstract; the blues can waltz or be abstract. Ballads can pick up steam and swing; they can even be bluesy! This dynamic show will explore the many moods possible in these two essential forms of jazz. Among the ballads will be a medley à la Jazz at the Philharmonic, and a mood-shifting “My Funny Valentine" à la Miles Davis in 1964. The blues will include the whisper-quiet “Frame For The Blues” and the lyrical waltz “All Blues.” Joining Carl will be Torrey Newhart (piano), Michael Radliff (electric guitar), Sean Peterson (bass), and Adam Carlson (drums).
