The blues: sad, simple, down and dirty. Ballads: slow, lyrical, and delicate. Or must they be? In fact, the blues can be strutting, celebratory, or abstract; the blues can waltz or be abstract. Ballads can pick up steam and swing; they can even be bluesy! This dynamic show will explore the many moods possible in these two essential forms of jazz. Among the ballads will be a medley à la Jazz at the Philharmonic, and a mood-shifting “My Funny Valentine" à la Miles Davis in 1964. The blues will include the whisper-quiet “Frame For The Blues” and the lyrical waltz “All Blues.” Joining Carl will be Torrey Newhart (piano), Michael Radliff (electric guitar), Sean Peterson (bass), and Adam Carlson (drums). Join them for an unforgettable night of blues and ballads.
