Renowned jazz vibraphonist/drummer Chuck Redd returns to The Shedd on tour in support of his newest CD, Groove City (Dalphine Records, March 1, 2019), joined by the pianist from the project, NYC's John Di Martino, Tom Wakeling on bass, and Charlie Doggett on drums. The album has a sweet set of standards -- "The Great City", "Renewal", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'", "Tide", "Evidence", "All Or Nothing At All", "Regulator", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Lonely Woman" -- and 2 originals: "A Groove For Gail" (Chuck's lovely wife, who has often joined him here in Eugene) and ( this we like!) "Blues In The Shedd".
"Groove City" isn't a real place, of course, but a state of mind…Chuck's state of mind, to be exact. As he puts it “It’s any bustling, gritty, urban community that is bursting with energy and diversity. It could be New York, DC, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago, Baltimore or New Orleans, or even an imaginary place that combines the energy and creativity of all of those cities.” Riffing off of that, AllAboutJazz, concludes: "That energy and creativity permeate every track on Groove City, inviting listeners to stop and spend some time in Redd’s grooving world."
