Michael Anderson and microphilharmonic open their 2023-24 season with a program featuring two late 18th century quintets for piano and winds in E flat Major, both scored for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Mozart premiered his version (K. 452) at the Imperial and Royal National Court Theater in Vienna on April 2, 1784. Beethoven premiered his version (Op. 16) on April 6th 12 years later, just as he was setting out on his voyage of symphonic composition. Although it is said to have been modeled on Mozart’s, Beethoven’s is as different as similar to the earlier work. Both are wonderful pieces!
