Over the years we've tried to make the OFAM gala opening concert a broad-reaching overview of what we have in store throughout the Festival, and this year's no exception! With deft hand and a twinkle in his eye, Festival mastermind Dick Hyman leads his all-star ensemble through a veritable pastiche of 1950s musical cultures -- swing, bebop and cool; early folk revival; television theme, Mitch Miller-style sing-alongs; musical theater gems and nightclub standards. It's all there, from the I Love Lucy and Rawhide themes, "Don't Be Cruel" and "Goodnight Irene" to "All Of You" and "America" to "Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Night In Tunisia" and "Come On-A My House". We're particularly interested in how Dick's going to pull off his promised segue from Lerner & Loewe's "Gigi" to Thelonius Monk's "Straight No Chaser".
A classic OFAM opener. A classic Hyman concert.
